    COMPLETE PRODUCTION FLOW

From Raw Material to Finished Product

Refrigeration requirements can change at every stage of food production.

    RECEIVING → INGREDIENT STORAGE → PROCESSING → COOLING / FREEZING →
    FINISHED PRODUCT STORAGE → DISPATCH

Africhill can work with the production layout to determine where cold rooms, freezer rooms and other temperature-controlled areas are required.

This allows the cold-storage infrastructure to form part of the production workflow rather than being treated as an isolated room.

    REFRIGERATION DESIGN

Refrigeration Capacity Starts With the Product

The physical size of an industrial cold room or freezer room is only one part of refrigeration design. In food processing, the product load can be one of the most important factors.

PRODUCT → INCOMING TEMPERATURE → TARGET TEMPERATURE → DAILY LOAD →
    PULL-DOWN TIME → ROOM SIZE → DOOR TRAFFIC → AMBIENT CONDITIONS →

    PRODUCT LOAD MATTERS

Holding Product Cold Is Different From Cooling Product Down

A cold room containing products that enter already at their required storage temperature mainly needs to maintain those conditions.

A room receiving large quantities of warmer product directly from production has an additional refrigeration duty. It must remove heat from that product within
    the required period.

The same principle applies to freezer rooms. Maintaining already-frozen products and freezing newly manufactured products are different refrigeration duties.

STORAGE LOAD ≠ PRODUCT COOLING LOAD

    WHY IT MATTERS

    ✓

    Storage

Maintains products already close to their target temperature.

    ✓

    Cooling Product

Requires additional refrigeration capacity to remove product heat.

    ✓

    Freezing Product

Can require a substantially different refrigeration duty from frozen storage.

    MULTIPLE TEMPERATURE ZONES

Different Products. Different Temperatures. One Facility.

Food-processing facilities frequently handle products with different temperature
    requirements.

Separate temperature-controlled rooms can be designed where required rather than
operating one large room at a compromise temperature.

    IN-HOUSE PANEL MANUFACTURING

We Manufacture the Room as Well as the Refrigeration Solution

A temperature-controlled facility begins with the insulated enclosure.

Africhill manufactures the insulated panels used to construct cold rooms,
freezer rooms and other controlled-temperature areas.

Rooms can therefore be configured around dimensions, production layout,
door positioning, product movement, internal partitions, temperature zones
    and refrigeration requirements.

    FOOD-PRODUCTION FACILITIES

    Designed for Food-Production Environments

Food-processing cold rooms need to support practical cleaning, product movement and
    the customer’s hygiene procedures.

The room layout can be designed around production flow while accounting for doors,
internal partitions, floors, drainage, product movement, equipment positioning
    and temperature monitoring.

Final specifications should be coordinated with the customer’s food-safety,
    hygiene and regulatory requirements.

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

    Food Processing Cold Storage FAQs

Practical answers about industrial cold rooms, freezer rooms, product loads,
multiple temperature zones and blast freezing.

What temperature should a food-processing cold room operate at?

There is no single temperature suitable for every food-processing application. The required temperature depends on the product and production process. Africhill designs the system around the specified operating requirements.

Can Africhill design cold rooms for an entire food factory?

Yes. Africhill can work from facility layouts and production requirements to design multiple cold rooms, freezer rooms and temperature-controlled areas.

Why does Africhill need the daily product load?

The quantity and incoming temperature of product determine how much additional heat the refrigeration system must remove and can significantly affect capacity.

Can warm product be cooled in a normal cold room?

Only if the room and refrigeration system have been designed for that duty. A storage room may not have sufficient capacity to rapidly cool large quantities of warm product.

What is the difference between a freezer room and a blast freezer?

A freezer room generally maintains frozen product at its storage temperature. A blast freezer is designed to reduce product temperature much faster and requires refrigeration and airflow capacity appropriate to the required cycle.

Can different factory areas operate at different temperatures?

Yes. Separate temperature-controlled rooms or zones can be designed where different products or production stages require different conditions.

Does Africhill supply food-processing projects outside South Africa?

Yes. Africhill manufactures in South Africa and supplies cold-storage solutions for projects throughout Africa.

Can Africhill quote from our factory drawings?

Yes. Layouts, architectural drawings, specifications, BOQs and tender documents can be provided for Africhill to assess the required cold-storage areas.
